Maghaberry Prison - Lisburn, Northern Ireland

Built on the site of a former World War II airbase that was used by the United States military for transfers, building work on the prison began in 1976. When it opened, it held all female prisoners, youth offenders and remanded prisoners. The male prison became fully operational in November 1987. Following the closure of HMP Belfast (Crumlin Road Gaol), in March 1996, Maghaberry became the adult committal prison in Northern Ireland. Two new accommodation blocks were opened in 1999. In 2003, a report recommended options to make the prison safe - including "a degree of separation" for republican (IRA) and loyalist inmates.
